Burundi is an English noun used to describe a country that lies in the African Great Lakes region, situated in east-central Africa, the capital of which is Bujumbura. The name Burundi is derived from the Kingdom of Burundi, which was established in 17th century and controlled much of the territory to the current Burundi.

Burundi is bordered by Rwanda on the north, Tanzania to the east and south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The official language is Kirundi, a Bantu language, but French and English are also used.

The economy of Burundi was mainly based on agriculture until the civil war in 1972, when the industry was destroyed. After the war, the economy was based on subsistence agriculture, with coffee being the primary export. In 2006, about 80 percent of the population of Burundi was living below the poverty line.

Burundi is a member of the African Union, the East African Community, the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Commonwealth of Nations and the Group of 77. The country is known for its rich culture, particularly its traditional drumming.

Burundi is home to several national parks, such asKibira, Ruvubu, Rusizi and Kigwena, as well as several wildlife reserves, such as the Gishwati and Kagera National Parks. It also has some of Africa's largest lakes, such as Lake Tanganyika, Lake Kivu and Lake Victoria.
