Aircraft propulsion is the process of pushing air or other gases backward to generate a thrust that propels an aircraft forward. Propellers, on the other hand, are used to generate thrust by rotating blades in a circular motion. The blades of a propeller are designed to create an area of low pressure which pulls the aircraft forward. Propellers are more suitable for slower speeds and are commonly used on smaller aircraft such as light aircraft, gliders and even some larger helicopters.

Aircraft propulsion systems are also classified according to their type of power source. Electric, hybrid and nuclear-powered aircraft propulsion systems are all possibilities for the future. Electric propulsion systems use electric motors to produce thrust, while hybrids combine electric and combustion engines to achieve maximum efficiency. Nuclear powered aircraft propulsion systems use uranium or other radioactive material to produce energy, a process that has yet to be perfected for flight.

No matter what type of aircraft propulsion system is used, the general principle remains the same: the engine or motors produce a thrust behind the aircraft and the aircraft moves forward. Aircraft propulsion has been a key factor in the advancement of aviation and has allowed aircraft to fly faster, farther and higher than ever before.
