Atmosphere Standard

Atmosphere standards refer to the upper and lower limits set for atmospheric concentrations of gaseous pollutants or other particulate matters that are known to cause air pollution or other impacts on human health and the environment. The standards are usually expressed as the maximum permissible concentration of certain pollutants, which is determined based on the available scientific evidence.

In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for six common air pollutants: ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead, and particulate matter. EPA sets primary NAAQS to protect public health, including the health of sensitive population such as the elderly, young children, and people with asthma. EPA sets secondary NAAQS to protect public welfare, including protection against visibility impairment, damage to animals, crops, vegetation, and buildings.

In addition to the national standards, states and local governments may set their own air quality standards. These standards usually apply to specific locations or areas, and are usually developed to address a particular air quality challenge in that area.
