Chinese chess, or Xiangqi as it is known in China, is an ancient board game that has been popular for centuries. It is based on the game of chess, but the pieces and their movements are different.

The pieces in Chinese chess are known as the KIng, the Rook, the Cannon, the Horse, the Guard, and the Soldier. The King is the most important piece and is placed in the middle of the board. Its function is similar to that of the King in Western chess. The Rook moves horizontally and vertically in straight lines, but is not allowed to jump over other pieces. The Cannon moves in the same way as the Rook, but it can not move until it has jumped over another piece. The Horse moves like the Knight in Western chess, and can jump over other pieces. The Guard moves diagonally and is usually placed on either side of the King. The Soldier moves one square forward and captures pieces by moving diagonally.

Game play usually begins with players making moves to protect their King. The object is to capture the enemy King by either surrounding it or blocking it from all sides. A game is won once a player's King is captured.
