The English word “delicacy” has dual meanings. It can refer to a food or dish considered to be especially delicious or of high quality, or something that is delicate and requires special care when handled.

In terms of food, a delicacy is an especially delicious dish or snack that is typically expensive, difficult to make, and/or rare. For instance, caviar is a delicacy that is often served as a special treat. Exotic fruits such as durian and lychee are also considered delicacies in many countries. Additionally, some specific dishes are often regarded as delicacies, such as foie gras, Escargot and truffle.

When referring to an object, delicacy means that the object is delicate and requires special care when handling. For example, a fragile porcelain cup would be considered a delicacy, because it could be easily damaged if handled too roughly.
