economic boycott的用法详解
'
Economic boycott is a type of protest where people or businesses refuse to buy goods and services from a target country or organization, in order to put pressure on them to change their policies. It is a non-violent form of protest, since it uses economic pressure rather than physical force.
The most famous example of an economic boycott is the boycott of Apartheid South African. Through boycotting South African goods and services, the international community was able to put pressure on the South African government to change policies which discriminated against black people. Other examples of economic boycotts include boycotting Chinese goods in response to the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, and the recent boycotting of Russian goods in response to their actions in the Ukraine.
The purpose of an economic boycott is to demonstrate the power of economic pressure by showing the target country or organization that their policies do not fit with the social, economic and political values of the boycotters. This can encourage the target to change their policies in order to maintain access to vital markets and resources.
The effectiveness of an economic boycott can be limited by the target’s access to other markets and resources, and by the boycotters’ access to alternative sources of goods and services. For example, boycotting South African goods had limited impact on their economy, due to the presence of large diamond and gold deposits which were not subject to the boycott. Similarly, the boycott of Russian goods has been limited by the presence of alternative producers of energy and other resources.
Economic boycotts can be an effective form of protest for certain issues, but it is important to bear in mind their limitations and make sure that the pressure is kept up in order to achieve the desired results.
