Free-to-air (FTA) is a term used to describe television (TV) and radio broadcasts that are not encrypted and so can be received by anyone with the appropriate receiving equipment.

In other words, free-to-air signals are transmitted unencrypted and are not exclusive to any particular group. The viewers or listeners do not need to pay to receive the broadcast. Instead, they typically use a one-off purchase of a receiver, such as an aerial for terrestrial TV, a satellite dish for satellite broadcasts, or a cable for cable TV.

Free-to-air broadcasts are often limited in their coverage area and are sometimes only available in certain countries or regions. For example, TV broadcasts may only be available in certain cities, or satellite broadcasts may be limited to certain geographic regions.

Free-to-air broadcasts are also typically limited in their programming. In the case of TV, some FTA broadcasts may only include news and current affairs programming, while others may broadcast a range of entertainment programs, including movies, sports, and music.

Despite these limitations, free-to-air broadcasts remain popular in many countries, as they provide viewers with a wide range of programming at no cost. Additionally, some countries have free-to-air digital services that offer enhanced programming options, such as high-definition (HD) and 4K resolution, interactive services, and catch-up TV.
